SATAHANKA IX - Today!

Satahanka participants made a five hour excursion to Alands cultural sights. Programme consisted of museum Jan-Karls Gården, Kastelholm Castle, Alands Maritime Museum in Mariehamn, museumship Pommern and a picnic-meal in Badhus-park.

At 11 AM an ecumenic prayer was held at ruined Notvikstornet-tower. Present were apart from the campers many local inhabitants because the church of Sund is closed due to the restoration work. As liturgist acted Juanita Fagerholm-Urch of Sunds parish and the lesson was given by chiefsecretary of the Finnish Seamens Mission, Sakari Lehmuskallio. In the event sang Mariehamns young peoples gospel-choir.

The competition rook part 19 crews of which 16 reached the finish line. Winners of the championships race were Seppo Ajanko and Markus Norelma as his crew.

Races has been held seven times from the year 1989 and four of them has had the WM-title, when foreigners has taken part as well as finnish competitors. In the Open group crews consist of two to three sailors and in the Junior group of maximum three upto 16-years old participants. This time all the crews sailed in the Open group.

The race has five parts of which are given penalty depending on the results. The lowest score can be ignored while recording the final.results.Three first parts are ordinary races in about three mile long triangular track. In the specialsailing crews should sail during one and half hours as far as they can following prerecorded turning points. The fifth part is rowing race.

The wind blew during the competition from 9-12 m/s. A few boats did fall but the help of security boats was not needed. The race went fine what is to be said about timetables and organisation and participants enjoyed the contesting.

Scout-class racer is a type developed for Finnish scouts sailtraining. In Finland there are 150 of them and in Sweden six. Boats length is 4,3 m, width 1,7 m, mastheight 6,3 m and sailplan 10 m2.
